Project

vidprep

A command-line tool that turns one video into everything a website needs to host it itself: streaming versions, a poster, scrub previews, chapters, caption files and an embed code. Open source, in early development.

vidprep takes one video file and makes a folder you can upload to any web host or storage bucket. There is no server to run and no video platform account.

  • Versions at several sizes, from 1080p down to 360p and never enlarged, for adaptive streaming with HLS.
  • A poster image, and a sheet of thumbnails for previews as you scrub.
  • Chapter files from the video's own markers, and empty caption files for each language you list.
  • An HTML snippet to paste into a page, and a check to run on the folder before you upload it.
  • Location tags and other metadata are removed from the video.
