A History of MTV in 10 Songs | The Track Star Podcast

In this episode of The Track Star Podcast, we sit down with Tom Freston, one of the founding executives behind MTV, to trace how a risky cable experiment grew into a defining cultural institution.

Through a chronological run of songs and moments, Freston walks us through MTV’s evolution: launching music video culture in the U.S., forcing cable companies to carry the channel, shaping how artists were presented, and gradually expanding from nonstop videos into the VMAs, Unplugged, Yo! MTV Raps, Total Request Live, and reality television.

Along the way, he reflects on why Live Aid marked a turning point for the network, how Michael Jackson helped establish music video premieres as shared cultural events, and MTV’s role in bringing hip-hop into middle American living rooms. He also explains how Comedy Central emerged from the same creative ecosystem, and how creativity, not corporate planning, drove the network’s biggest breakthroughs.
