Testing This Millennial’s Hip Hop Knowledge | Track Star*

On this episode we’re joined by underground hip hop curator, influencer, and self-described “tastemaker,” Chris Heyn. Known for planting his flag early on the internet’s most chaotic and forward-leaning artists, Chris has built a following off sharp opinions, algorithm-defying picks, and a relentless commitment to what’s next.

In this episode, Chris dives headfirst into the new wave-rage beats, blown-out 808s, melodic flex anthems, and the internet-born scenes bubbling just beneath the mainstream. From Playboi Carti and Lil Uzi Vert’s shape-shifting trap energy to the hyper-online edges of Nettspend, fakemink, and OsamaSon, the conversation moves fast and hits hard. Chris talks about how he used to dig to find new music on blogs but now relies on TikTok, Reddit, YouTube and word-of-mouth.

We debate the evolution of “rage,” the influence of YoungBoy, the global cross-pollination happening with artists like Llondon Actress and Fimiguerrero, and why this new class of artists might be redefining what a rap star even looks like.
