Testing This Hardcore Expert's Music Knowledge | The Track Star Podcast

The Track Star Podcast continues our CBGB series with writer, record collector, and hardcore historian Steven Blush, breaking down how CBGB evolved from punk’s downtown art scene into the chaotic, all-ages world of New York hardcore.

Through a handful of defining records from the early 1980s, Blush explains how the venue’s identity shifted: why the matinees became a proving ground for a new generation of street kids, how slam dancing and stage-diving changed the relationship between band and crowd, and why hardcore’s “anti-fashion” ethos made CBGB the perfect home for the movement.

Blush also traces CBGB’s deeper roots through owner Hilly Kristal’s unlikely path from cabaret and piano bars to punk’s most legendary club, and connects the hardcore explosion to the wider national scenes coming out of Washington, DC, the West Coast, and beyond.
